Discover the Albuquerque BioPark: A Must-See Gem for Families Moving to the Southwest!
Many of us have fond memories of visiting a zoo or our first early experiences with wildlife. If you think about it right now, I bet something comes to mind. One of my earliest memories was actually from visiting a petting zoo, and I was too afraid to participate in any of the hand feeding, as I was sure those goats would chomp my little adolescent fingers right off. It was actually a pretty influential early experience, as I quickly regretted not taking advantage of it after the opportunity passed. It shaped my way of viewing new things, and I decided from that point on I never wanted to feel the regret of not trying something new or different ever again—even if it was a little scary. This is one of the many things that helped me become a much more open-minded person who embraces new experiences, challenges, and opportunities to learn.
Packing up the family and moving across the country can be scary and filled with stressors. I’ve done it myself many times throughout my life, as a 22-year career in the military means you’re going to move a lot! I’ve had the amazing opportunity to visit several zoos all over the world, and I have to say that the Albuquerque BioPark is a true gem of the entire Southwestern United States. The BioPark is a top destination for families looking to relocate—or even just visit—New Mexico. But the BioPark is more than just a zoo; it also includes the Aquarium, Botanic Garden, and Tingley Beach, a local hot spot for stocked fishing and small-scale water sports (RC boats and such).
The BioPark is great for families for many reasons, including:
Memberships & Affordability: The park offers numerous packages with unlimited visit memberships and remains incredibly affordable—they haven’t raised ticket prices in 10 years!
Educational Fun: Interactive exhibits, conservation programs, and behind-the-scenes tours.
Outdoor Recreation: Walking trails, picnic areas, and hands-on nature experiences.
Year-Round Events: Seasonal festivals, night tours, and family-friendly programming.
The BioPark reflects the city’s commitment to a high quality of life for New Mexicans and reaches far beyond our great state’s borders with several international conservation efforts carried out by the New Mexico BioPark Society. The BioPark recently received certification as an Autism Center, making it a top destination choice for families with an autistic member. They even hosted a low-sensory night during the River of Lights holiday event that made it possible for numerous families to enjoy the event together.
Some of the most popular attractions include:
The recently hatched Gentoo Penguin and Cape Vulture chicks
Ben the Andean Bear, who recently moved to Albuquerque and is now enjoying 300+ days of sunshine a year and the lower cost of living after relocating from Texas
The new Asia exhibit—it’s phenomenal, and you’re just going to have to see it for yourself!
If you’re looking to relocate your family and want to give your children the same kinds of experiences you had as a kid, you need to be looking at Albuquerque! New Mexico has so many great things going for it that appeal to families considering a move: lower cost of living, lots of sunshine, great outdoor opportunities, and our ridiculously affordable real estate market are just a few reasons more and more families are choosing to pack up and make the move.
Our team at Heritage & Haven specializes in helping families just like yours relocate from out of state. If you own a home in California, Colorado, Texas, Arizona, Washington, New York, or Florida—to name a few—you can likely sell your home there and make a huge upgrade for your family here, as our housing market is often much more affordable.
